GET HAPPY SUMMER DAY CAMP TRAINING KICKS OFF TODAY FOR THE WEEK
100 YOUTH AND RECREATION STAFF DESCEND ON IQALUIT FOR 10TH YEAR


Iqaluit, June 17, 2024 - Beginning today, the Recreation and Parks Association of Nunavut (RPAN) will welcome 100 youth and recreation staff from 11 communities and 2 organizations from across Nunavut to Iqaluit this week to participate in youth leader training sessions to deliver RPAN’s “Get Happy Summer Day Camp” in their communities for children aged 5-12 this summer.   

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Get Happy Summer Day Camp program in Nunavut.  Training begins today at 9 a.m., and continues until Thursday (June 20) at the Asqarniit Hotel and Conference Centre, each day until 4:30 p.m., with limited sessions held at the AWG Indoor Sports Field (Tues. and Wed., 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.).

Led by Dawn Currie, RPAN’s former Executive Director, along with partners from the Jays Care Foundation, the Red Cross, United for Literacy, Actua and the Piruqatigiit Resource Centre, participants will be led through sessions to refine and learn new skills about leadership, planning, responsibility, games and activities, First Aid, integrating and promoting literacy, and how to make camps accessible and inclusive for all.

It is expected that Premier P.J. Akeeagok; Minister of Community and Government Services, David Joanasie; and Minister of Health, John Main, will join the staff and youth for lunch on Tues., June 18 at 12 p.m.   

Recreation staff and youth from Arctic Bay, Arviat, Baker Lake, Iqaluit, Igloolik, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk, Pond Inlet, Sanikiluaq, Taloyoak and Whale Cove will participant in, and host Summer Day Camp programs in their communities.  In addition, RPAN will welcome for the first time, the Piruqatigiit Resource Centre (Iqaluit) and PACA Baffin Society (Iqaluit) to the Get Happy Summer Day Camp program.  

Families interested in participating in the Summer Day Camp in the communities or with the organizations listed above, are encouraged to watch for registration information from their community’s recreation department or reach out to the organizations for more information.
